Manchester City continued their dominant start to the Premier League season with a commanding 4-1 victory over newly promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday, despite conceding an early goal. Erling Haaland led the charge with a hat-trick, while Kevin De Bruyne also found the net, keeping City perfect in their pursuit of a fifth consecutive league title, as Ipswich remained without a point. Ipswich shocked the defending champions by taking the lead in the seventh minute.
Sammie Szmodics capitalized on a through ball from Ben Johnson, slipping behind City's defense. Ederson, City's goalkeeper, mishandled Szmodics' shot, allowing the ball to roll into the net and giving the visitors a surprising 1-0 advantage.
City quickly responded with a flurry of goals, ignited by Haaland's penalty in the 12th minute. This goal set off a rapid-fire sequence, as De Bruyne took advantage of a mistake by Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric to put City ahead. Moments later, De Bruyne chipped a ball over the defense, and Haaland outpaced Muric to score his second goal, completing a remarkable turnaround in just 191 seconds.
The first half nearly saw City extend their lead further, with Rico Lewis and De Bruyne both hitting the crossbar in quick succession. However, it wasn't until the 88th minute that Haaland completed his hat trick with a powerful strike from outside the box, marking his fourth goal of the season.
Throughout the match, City dominated possession with 76%, limiting Ipswich to just one shot on goal while generating 13 of their own. The newly promoted side struggled to keep City at bay, spending much of the game penned into their own half.
The match also saw the return of Ilkay Gundogan, who received a warm ovation from the Etihad crowd when he was substituted on in the second half, marking his first appearance for Pep Guardiola's side since 2023.
City's emphatic win followed their season-opening 2-0 victory at Chelsea, while Ipswich, back in the Premier League for the first time since 2002, continued their difficult start with a second consecutive loss, having been beaten 2-0 by Liverpool in their opener.
Tottenham, West Ham win
The other results on the day saw Tottenham Hotspur get their first win of the season with a demolition job of Everton. Heung-Min Son scored a brace and Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero also chipped in with the goals in front of their fans at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
