Proud to push the boundaries of genre norms, Indo-Canadian South Asian singer, songwriter, and rapper Abhi, who released his latest EP,
JouJourney>Destination
, in June is glad to have secured editorial playlist placements and a Top 10 chart spot.
Abhi blends diverse sounds from
Rap
and
Hip-Hop
to
Pop
and
EDM
, creating a rich soundscape that reflects his Indian and Western heritage.
His journey began at 17 years of age with the release of his first EP Light Out. He immersed himself in Western and
Indian music
traditions, mastering the art of rapping and singing in multiple languages. His vocal talents extend to the piano and harmonium, showcasing his dedication to refining his craft and establishing a unique sound.
“Journey>Destination is a project that bridges the gap between Indian and Western sound. This album shadows me as a human and my journey so far on this planet,” he says. The EP interweaves traditional Indian timbres with Western culture, producing a sonic landscape reflective of his musical journey.
Engrossed in the study of Indian classical music, Abhi delved into the nuances of ragas and alankars, blending these elements into his music.
In addition to his music, ABHI also debuted on the web series
Life of GUGU
, a short anime web series. Written and executed by ABHI, the screening was held at
Toronto
, Canada. Speaking about it, Abhi says, "Life of GUGU is a short anime web-series that was rolled out parallel to the music EP. GUGU is a character I created a couple years ago- GUGU are all brown kids that live this hybrid life between being desi but living in the West. The show will show the day to day shenanigans that go in his life. I believe a lot of people can relate to this and can find themselves in GUGU. The
web series
is scored via all songs from the EP."
