 Here's what caused the 'glitch' as per the company

Microsoft 365 services went down for a large number of users worldwide today. Thousands of users of Microsoft 365 services reported having issues with services like Outlook and Teams on Monday. In social media posts and comments on platforms like outage tracker Downdetector, impacted users said that they were having trouble checking their emails, loading calendars or opening other Microsoft 365 applications such as Powerpoint.
Microsoft acknowledged the issue on its Microsoft365 Status page.

"We're investigating an issue impacting users attempting to access Exchange Online or functionality within Microsoft Teams calendar. For more information, please refer to MO941162 in the admin center," the company said. The company confirmed issues with its video calling apps Teams and Skype. "We're aware of an issue impacting users attempting to access or use Skype and Microsoft Teams. We're reviewing system telemetry to isolate the source of the issue. More information is being provided under https://portal.office.com/servicestatus," the company further said.

Microsoft Services restoration work moving at slow pace

Microsoft has now restored the services. "We’ve started to deploy a fix which is currently progressing through the affected environment. While this progresses, we’re beginning manual restarts on a subset of machines that are in an unhealthy state. For more information, please refer to MO941162 in the admin center," the company's initial update said.

"Our fix has reached approximately 98% of the affected environments and our targeted restarts required for mitigation are being performed as quickly as possible. Additional details can be found in the admin center under MO941162," the company said in a later post.

What caused Microsoft outage

Microsoft said that it has spotted the issue that caused the outage. "We've isolated the root cause and are performing multiple mitigation actions to expedite recovery. We've confirmed that there is no enterprise impact to Microsoft Teams. As there is no enterprise impact, we're providing updates through https://portal.office.com/servicestatus," said the company.
