France's win in their Euro 2024 opener against Austria was marred by a nasty nose injury to their captain and star player Kylian Mbappe in Duesseldorf on Monday, June 17. According to reports in French media, Mbappe has a 'suspected broken nose' and might miss a couple of games for the former world champions.
The Les Bleus defeated Austria 1-0 after defender Maximilian W¶ber headed a cross from Real Madrid's new recruit into his own net in the first half. It was a bittersweet evening in the German city for France as they managed three points in their Group D opener but had their captain reportedly leave for the hospital in an ambulance after the contest.
France coach Didier Deschamps, who led the national team to its 100th win under his watch, said the team will wait and watch the developments concerning Mbappe's injury.
"He has got a really bad nose, We'll have to wait and see, the medical staff are dealing with it. We'll have to see what's going to be done and then how long it will take. It is very bad news for us tonight," Deschamps said.
The French tactician did not reveal whether France will have the services of Mbappe in the remainder of the tournament. France next play group-toppers Netherlands on Friday.
"Obviously, the French team with or without him, this is not the same thing. I hope he can be there," Deschamps said.
MBAPPE BOOKED ON DRAMATIC EVENING
The injury happened late in the second half when Mbappe clashed heads with Austria defender Kevin Danso. Mbappe fell to the ground in pain before goalkeeper Patrick Pent called for attention.
Mbappe's shirt was covered with blood after the blow to the nose. Mbappe, after the initial medical attention, tried to play on but he fell to the ground again, holding his face in pain.
Mbappe gesture did not go down well with the Austrian fans, who accused the France captain of time-wasting. There were boos from the stands when Mbappe went down the second time. He was booked by referee Jesus Gil Manzano and replaced by Olivier Giroud.
It was a mixed night for Mbappe as the star player missed an early opportunity to put France ahead. However, he dribbled past three defenders and cut back to send the ball into the box in the 38th minute which led to the own goal, which was also the only goal of the match.
Mbappe missed another chance 10 minutes into the second half, this time with only the Austrian goalkeeper to beat.
