Police have arrested a man for allegedly threatening to kill a developer in Mumbai's Kandivali like Shiv Sena leader Ashok Sawant and demanding Rs 1 crore as extortion.
The accused, Madhukar Masavkar alias Ahu, who in the past was arrested by the Anti Extortion Cell of Mumbai Crime Branch, has been threatening and trying to extort Rs 1 crore from developer Mukesh Waghela.
Waghela is developing a Mhada layout in Kandivali in the northwestern suburbs of Mumbai.
According to police, the complaint against Masavkar was filed by general manager Satish Hegde after repeated harassment by Masavkar. Masavkar had demanded that he be paid Rs 1 crore or allotted a shop in the development or else he wouldn’t allow the company officials to function.
He started harassing employees and threatening them and even said that some of his accomplices had been out of jail and were put at work to take care of the Waghela like Ashok Sawant.
Sawant was a corporator who was killed in broad daylight in Kandivali over cable territory related disputes in 2018.
Msavkar had been arrested on charges of extortion and threatening and has been sent to judicial custody by the Samta Nagar police station officials.
Some threat messages sent by Masavkar on a WhatsApp group are being analysed by police and a forensic analysis will be done, said a senior police official privy to investigations.
