KKR assistant coach Abhishek Nayar is likely to be appointed as one of the members of the support staff in the Indian team. IndiaToday.in has learnt from reliable sources that Nayar will join the Indian team in their tour of Sri Lanka, which will be Gautam Gambhir's first assignment as the head coach of the team. Nayar, who has been at KKR for six years, has a verified history of helping Indian domestic players through tough times including the likes of Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik.
Alongside Nayar, it is expected that the Board of Control for Cricket in India will rope in another former KKR player - Ryan ten Doeschate, who currently works as the assistant coach at the LAKR franchise in Major League Cricket in the United States of America.
Both Nayar and Doeschate have been in the KKR set-up at different times and are known to be kind individuals. Nayar has a verified history of helping Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik, Rinku Singh and others through tough times. Players like Varun Chakravarthy have mentioned how Nayar motivated the dressing room after tough losses in the 2024 season of the IPL.
"In the last game, after conceding so many runs, it was a tough pill to take but the whole team motivated us. Abhishek Nayar and even Shahrukh Khan came and spoke to me, definitely motivated us," Chakravarthy had said in a Twitter post during the IPL.
The Indian men's team support staff which included Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach), T. Dilip (fielding coach) and Vikram Rathour (batting coach) are not going to be a part of the Gambhir era. The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the decision on Tuesday, 9 July via a press release where the organisation congratulated the trio for a highly successful tenure with the Indian team. The BCCI also thanked Rahul Dravid for nurturing young talent and for taking India to three finals in three ICC tournaments in the 2023/24 cycle.
