NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Jury selection will begin on Monday at 1 p.m. at Brooklyn Federal Court in the murder trial of Jason Mizell, better known as Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC.
Mizell was fatally shot in the head inside his Jamaica, Queens recording studio on Oct. 30, 2002.
Karl Jordan, Jr., 40, and Ronald Washington, 59, are accused of murdering Mizell. They were both indicated in 2020 and are being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
Mizell, Jordan Jr., and Washington are all from Hollis, Queens. Mizell and Jordan Jr. were neighbors.
In 2021, Attorney General Merrick Garland directed the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York not to seek the death penalty.
In May 2023, a third defendant was charged with Mizell’s murder.
Jay Bryant, 50, is accused of participating in Mizell’s murder. He reportedly left behind an article of clothing at the crime scene that contained his DNA. Bryant will be tried in 2026.
Opening statements in the trial will begin on the morning of Monday, Jan. 29.
