NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- The IRS is rolling out a new pilot program for a free, government-run, online tax filing service.
The service is called Direct File, and the first phase of the program will be available in 12 states, including New York. The free file program has no income limit for eligibility, making it unique from other free programs. However, to try out the program taxpayers must be selected through an invite.
Some private tax preparation companies, like a spokesperson for the Turbo Tax parent company Intuit, have criticized the competing service, calling it a "half-baked solution," the New York Times reported.
The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on Jan. 29.
