New Delhi,UPDATED: Sep 27, 2024 23:27 IST

After a stop-start play on Day 1 of the second Test between India and Bangladesh at Green Park, Kanpur, the second day is also likely to face the same fate. The match got off to a delayed start with the first ball being bowled an hour late on 10:30 am IST due to wet outfield. There was more delay at the start of the second session with rain once again delaying the start of proceedings by 15 minutes.

The final nail in the coffin came right in the middle of the second session as a heavy downpour forced early stumps as Day 1 could only witness a total of 35 overs. The Day 2 of the Test is expected to be even worse as 100% chances of rain are forecasted on Saturday, September 28.

IND vs BAN, 2nd Test Day 1: Highlights

According to weather.com, the rain chances start at 74% at the start of play and go up to 83% from 11 am onwards with predictions of thundershowers for the rest of the day. Hence, any play looks highly unlikely at the venue where stumps were called over two hours earlier than the scheduled time on Day 1 due to incessant rain.

Hence, both teams will have to plan smartly in order to win this Test. India are already sitting safe after winning the first Test in Chennai by 280 runs while Bangladesh desperately need a win to save the series and register their first-ever drawn Test series against India.

Bangladesh finish Day 1 on 107/3

Coming back to the play on Day 1, India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first under overcast conditions after a delayed start to the match.

Fast bowler Akash Deep got the first strike for India as he made Zakir Hasan edge the ball to Yashavi Jaiswal at gully for a 24-ball duck. The youngster further trapped Mominul Haque in front of the stumps to give the second blow to Bangladesh on the score of 29.

After the two early blows, Bangladesh’s innings was stabilized by captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (31) and Mominul Haque who added 51 runs for the third wicket.

However, their stand was brought to an end by Ravichandran Ashwin who dismissed Shanto lbw in the second session. Bangladesh finished Day 1 on 107/3 with Mominul Haque (40*) and Mushfiqur Rahim (6*) at the crease.
