YONKERS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A Yonkers community rallied to save their 175-year-old parish church.
Hundreds of people packed a town hall meeting on Wednesday night about the future of St. Mary's Church of the Immaculate Conception on South Broadway.
A spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York told PIX11 News the church building requires $10 million in repairs.
"There are discussions about the future of the church, but no final decision has been made about its closure," they added.
Parishioner John Khader was baptized and married in the church. He questions the $10 million repair bill.
"This is a church that's been pretty much well maintained by the parishioners, and we get yearly reports, and all of a sudden now, it's $10 million in renovations? Something doesn't smell right here. This is a church, the first one in Yonkers; how can the archdiocese forget about that? I mean, there's been enough churches already closed in Westchester, three in Yonkers alone," he said.
John Kiriakos said he loves attending the Arabic Mass at the church every Sunday.
"Any church close, I'll be sad for it, especially this one, because I came to a lot of weddings in this church, a lot of funerals in this church," he said.
