Online dating platforms including
Tinder
,
Hinge
,
Bumble
and
Grindr
are turning to AI to combat dating app fatigue among
Gen Z
users. The report noted that the move aims to bring disappointed daters back on the platforms and
AI chatbots
provide them personalised advice.
“AI is going to help people make better connections. It’s that friend in the bar who’s helping you to ask someone out — but in the virtual context,” the Financial Times quoted Grindr chief product officer AJ Balance, as saying.
AI chatbot to work like virtual ‘wingman’
These platforms are developing or testing AI chatbots and tools to act as virtual 'wingmen'.
These AI tools will offer assistance to Gen Z users in crafting compelling chat-up lines, building attractive profiles and even providing feedback on flirting techniques.
“The idea of a wingman talking to someone else’s wingman, maybe to see what it’d be like to go on a date or to find common areas of interest, is something that’s worth exploring,” he added.
Tinder and Bumble exploring AI-powered profile building tools
Tinder and Bumble are also exploring AI's potential. Tinder says that it aims to use AI “to support daters throughout the entire dating journey” within “the coming 12 months”.
Tinder is also testing an AI profile-building tool with a limited rollout. The tool is designed to alleviate “the burden of photo selection”, which scans a user’s personal photos and selects the best images. Bumble is also developing a similar feature.
Meanwhile, Hinge is developing an AI chatbot to provide feedback on user responses to profile prompts.
Hinge said it is also looking to achieve its “ultimate goal” of letting user feel “like they have a personal matchmaker (driven by AI) inside the app”.
