CHENNAI: In a heist straight out of a thriller,
burglars
struck Srinivasapuram in
Foreshore Estate
during the early hours of Saturday. They locked
residents
inside their homes and then looted five
houses
in the area whose occupants were away.
Residents said miscreants often steal utensils from the neighbourhood and sell them to purchase alcohol. Burglars identified houses whose occupants had gone out after locking their homes.
“To avoid neighbours coming out and catching them in the act, they latched their homes from outside,” said a police officer.
Netaji and Parveen, a newly married couple, reside in one of the targeted houses. Netaji, a stunt performer in Kollywood, and his wife moved to Srinivasapuram two months ago. On Friday, the couple visited Parveen’s mother’s house at Sathya Nagar. They rushed home on Saturday after a neighbor alerted them. Upon checking the almirah, they found 2 lakh in cash, 12 silk sarees, eight sovereigns of gold jewellery, and other valuables missing. Police said Parveen’s mother, a daily wage earner, had purchased the sarees and utensils for her daughter’s new home.
The burglars also looted valuables from houses of Senthil Kumar, Munna, and two other residents. “Some residents sleep on the beach due to the heat and most leave their doors unlocked. The thieves used this to sneak into these houses,” said a resident.
Police registered cases and have launched a hunt for the suspects.
