AGARTALA: The
death toll
rose to 17 in Tripura due to a
landslide
with the fresh
casualty
of seven from two tribal families on Thursday. The
villagers
so far recovered six bodies and efforts are being made to locate the last victim.
Police
said a devastating landslide has resulted in the death of seven people, including a 3-year-old child of a family, after burying their house in Gardang panchayat of Santirbazar under South Tripura district.
The landslide, triggered by heavy rain, struck Ashwini Tripura locality early morning, tragically affecting two families.
As of now, six bodies have been recovered and the deceased have been identified as Umacharan Tripura (25), Mandira Tripura (23), Prasenjit Tripura (21), Ajay Tripura (16), Rakesh Tripura (18), Jyotika Tripura (21), and Kumtuisa Tripura (3). Residents and authorities are working together to recover the last body.
Several other family members sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment in the local hospital. An injured survivor Sukhen recounted the suddenness of the landslide, “The landslide occurred before sunrise with no warning. We lost seven people—three of my sons, one daughter-in-law, one granddaughter, my younger brother, and his wife.”
Earlier, at least nine people were killed in South Tripura, Gomati, and Khowai districts due to a separate landslide occurrence while a woman was drawn in
flood
water in Khowai district. Another person in Gomati district has been missing for three days.
