QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A Queens mother and widow of an FDNY firefighter received quite a surprise from a nonprofit — a grant to help her pay her bills.
Christine Floyd’s life was turned upside down earlier this year when she lost the love of her life. Her husband, Derek Floyd, a 36-year-old FDNY firefighter and Marine veteran, died in April due to a heart-related issue.
Her community has since come together to show support. Floyd said it’s this love that is getting her through the tough times.
Christine Floyd, 34, is a beloved school counselor from Bayside, Queens. She received a visit at work from Jillian Crane, the president and CEO of the First Responders Children's Foundation. Crane came with a grant to help Floyd with her bills.
Floyd has found financial and emotional help through the First Responders Children's Foundation, a nonprofit that has helped 700,000 first responder families and over 1.4 million children across the United States.
Crane’s organization provides families with free access to mental health and resiliency counseling, bereavement grants and scholarships.
Crane said 330 first responders die in the line of duty across the country each year.
