NEW YORK (PIX11) – Local leaders are calling for Mayor Eric Adams to resign after an indictment on federal criminal charges on Wednesday.
If he does resign, who takes his place?
In the event the mayor relinquishes his position or is unable to fulfill it, the New York City public advocate is next in line to take their place.
Public Advocate Jumanne Williams would serve as the acting mayor until a special election or general election is held. Williams would be required to schedule the special election on the first Tuesday within the first 80 days of his interim position.
Williams is a Brooklynite who previously served on the City Council representing the 45th District. A spokesperson for Williams released a statement Wednesday night.
"The news of this indictment is itself incredibly serious. As the facts emerge, the Public Advocate will have more to say to the people of New York City, and right now, he is focused on how best to ensure that New Yorkers can regain trust, confidence and stability in city government," spokesperson William Gerlich said.
As a representative, he sponsored the Community Safety Act that contributed to ending Stop, Question & Frisk practices in communities of color. He also helped establish the NYPD's Office of Inspector General to investigate unlawful and unethical behavior.
Although state and local leaders have called for Adams to step down, the mayor has sworn to "fight this with every ounce of my strength and spirit."
“I always knew that If I stood my ground for New Yorkers that I would be a target—and a target I became. If I am charged, I am innocent and I will fight this with every ounce of my strength and spirit,” Adams said in a statement released Wednesday night.
