NEW YORK (PIX11) – Hot and humid air is blanketing the New York City area this week, with temperatures expected to reach over 90 degrees.

A heat wave is defined as a period of unusually hot weather that lasts more than two days, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The sweltering heat this week has yet to be defined as a heat wave, but you should still take precautions like staying hydrated, staying in a cool place, and reducing outdoor activity.

The upcoming hot weather begs the question – when was the last time the Big Apple experienced a heat wave?

The last time New York City experienced a heat wave was Sept. 5-8, 2023, according to PIX11 meteorologists. That was the only heat wave the city experienced in 2023, while 2022 had three heat waves that happened between July and August.
