Ticker-tape parades have been a tradition in Manhattan for over 130 years, starting with the grand opening of the Statue of Liberty in 1886.

Ticker tape was a one-inch ribbon of paper punched by a "ticker" machine that was used to track the stock market in real-time, so brokers along the Statue of Liberty's parade route began throwing it to celebrate the occasion, according to the Downtown Alliance.

There have been 206 ticker-tape parades in the Big Apple so far. The last ticker-tape parade was held in 2021 for essential workers amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
