NEW DELHI:
Australia
opener
David Warner
is known to be a swashbuckling batsman with all the shots in the book.
But the kind of shot he played on the first day of the first Test against
Pakistan
at Perth on Thursday was straight from T20 cricket.
The second delivery of the 21st over bowled by
Shaheen Afridi
was pitched on a length and angling into the left-hander.
But
Warner
got down low, used his body to get inside the line and then helped it on its way with an audacious flap over long leg and the shot sailed a long way over, leaving the crowd and the commentators amazed.
Pakistan legend
Wasim Akram
, commentating in the Test called the shot "unbelievable."
David Warner raced to an unbeaten 72 as he and partner
Usman Khawaja
amassed 117 without loss by lunch.
Australia won the toss and opted to bat first at Perth Stadium, consigning Pakistan to the field in searing heat.
Pakistan have never won a Test series in Australia and have failed to win a Test in the country since 1995.
Pakistan were beaten by an innings in both matches in Australia four years ago, when Warner ominously scored 154 and 335 not out.
