NEW DELHI: Indian-origin

UK MP

Shivani Raja on Wednesday took oath on

Bhagwat Gita

after winning from Leicester East.
In a post on X, Raja posted a video of the swearing-in ceremony.
"It was an honour to be sworn into Parliament today to represent Leicester East", she said in the post.
"I was truly proud to swear my allegiance to His Majesty

King Charles

on the Gita", she added.

Raja was born in Leicester, where her mother relocated from Rajkot and her father, a Gujarati, arrived from Kenya in the 1970s. She is involved in her family's business focusing on property construction and hospitality.
“They had lost faith in politicians as previous MPs had not really stood for the people. There was no one standing that was relatable and people saw me as a breath of fresh air. They were also disappointed that the previous MP did not stand up for Leicester during the riots and immediately blamed Hindus before speaking to anyone,” Raja said.
Labour had held Leicester East since 1987. The area experienced riots in 2022, a topic Raja mentioned following her victory.
