NEW YORK (PIX11) -- As this year's Tribeca Film Festival draws close, there's more for movie fans to enjoy this weekend. It's the first-ever "De Niro Con," taking a look back at 50 years of his iconic films.
As one of New York's most celebrated actors of all time, Robert De Niro is starring in a new role as the centerpiece of De Niro Con. Fans are welcomed downtown to a museum dedicated to the movie titan. Inside, an immersive six-screen projection, narrated by the actor using hundreds of audio samples of his work.
Fans will take in five decades of iconic roles this weekend and mark Bob's 80th birthday.
"This time, with these movies, they'll be in the theater with an audience. I might watch them and go through that experience, and I like to, actually," De Niro said.
Movie buffs can also see original costumes, scripts, and memorabilia from the sets.
In the '90s, De Niro had a renaissance. He got behind the camera lens to feature more of the city where he was born and raised in films like "A Bronx Tale."
In 1988, De Niro watched Chazz Palminteri perform a one-man show based on his autobiographical script, "A Bronx Tale."
"I've been riding that wave ever since," Palminteri told PIX11 News.
De Niro made his directorial debut and starred in the '90s cult classic, ultimately becoming a mentor to the now 72-year-old legend.
Our Anthony DiLorenzo asked Palminteri, "Do you think you owe much of this success to Mr. De Niro?" "I'd say all of it. He gave me my shot," the actor said.
Palminteri was in Tribeca Thursday night for the world premiere film of his now timeless one-man show.
He told DiLorenzo the best advice he ever got from De Niro was that "The box office never judges true art. It's judged by time. And 35 years ago, "A Bronx Tale" became a classic, then a musical."
It is a full-circle moment as Chazz celebrates his co-star and friend whose body of work transcends time.
