Toyota
announced an
investment
in
Ionna
on Wednesday, joining seven other automakers to support the implementation of its EV charging network across
North America
. This investment grants Toyota and Lexus customers access to Ionna's public network of
DC fast chargers
, which will start rolling out later this year.
Toyota, which currently offers the Toyota bZ4X and Lexus RZ
battery EVs
in the U.S.
and Canada, aims to have 30 battery EV models globally and produce up to 3.5 million annually by 2030. Ionna, based in Durham, North Carolina, plans to install at least 30,000 charge ports in North America by 2030, featuring both
CCS
and
NACS
connectors to accommodate all battery EV drivers.
Most electric vehicles use either the Combined Charging System (CCS) or the North American Charging Standard (NACS) for public fast charging. The
White House
supports the auto industry's efforts to standardize Tesla's NACS for all EVs in the U.S. to boost sales and combat climate change. Automakers supporting Ionna include BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis.
