NEW YORK (PIX11) – A section of Times Square was closed off Saturday evening due to a suspicious device observed in a vehicle, according to the NYPD.
Police responded to the call just after 4 p.m., and asked the public to avoid the surrounding areas of West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue, according to one tweet.
The MTA also had NO. 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, and 42 St Shuttle trains bypass Times Sq-42 St in both directions due to the NYPD investigation. NYPD Emergency Service Unit and the bomb squad were called in minutes later, according to authorities.
When emergency personnel arrived multiple people were blocking police responding to the scene, according to authorities.
“Happy Saturday to all! Except the people who thought it was a good idea to block an NYPD ESU vehicle on the way to a bomb threat call,” read a tweet by NYPD Commissioner Kaz Daughtry. “They will be spending their Saturday where they belong - in jail!”
Multiple people were arrested for obstructing the NYPD from getting to the scene. The device discovered inside the vehicle was deemed not to be a threat, police officials stated.
