BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- For many graduates, a cap and gown signify the culmination of years of academic achievement but for a special group of men, graduation represents something far more profound: a chance to rebuild their lives.
These men are graduates of The Doe Fund's Ready, Willing & Able program, an initiative that empowers homeless men to break the cycle of homelessness and incarceration.
Aaron Hanson, a 61-year-old recording artist and actor, will become one such graduate next month. Due to personal struggles, Hanson lost his home, car, and belongings in a single day. He describes his reliance on alcohol and pain as a contributing factor, stating, "My whole life changed in one hour."
The Doe Fund steps in to address these very situations. Through housing, training, and support services, the program equips men with the tools they need to rejoin society.
Hanson, after a challenging period, discovered The Doe Fund as a form of "divine intervention." His story exemplifies the program's impact.
Radel Shaban, a former participant, now serves as the Associate Director of the Doe Fund. His journey, from incarceration to success story, underscores the program's transformative power. Shaban entered the program seeking building maintenance certifications but discovered a passion for social services, leading him to pursue higher education while working at the organization.
The Doe Fund recognizes that homelessness stems from a variety of challenges. Christopher Luggiero, the organization's Vice President of Communications, emphasizes their diverse programming. "There's no one-size-fits-all solution," he says. "We offer support ranging from obtaining a driver's license to substance abuse treatment."
As Hanson prepares to graduate, his message for others facing hardship is one of resilience. He describes the Ready, Willing & Able program as "a spiritual bandaid, an emotional bandaid, literally. And it works. It just works."
Graduation is set for July 23rd.
