YONKERS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- He'd been charged with criminally negligent homicide, but the juvenile driver who killed Sgt. Frank Gualdino, a veteran Yonkers Police Department motorcycle cop, was sentenced on Thursday to two years probation and 480 hours of community service.
The victim's family made a very public statement calling on the New York State Legislature to re-write its raise-the-age laws.
About 150 current and retired officers from the 600-member department stood behind Lisa Gualdino, the widow of their fallen colleague, as she read a statement.
"Had this incident happened several years prior, laws would have been in place that would have held this individual responsible as an adult for causing the death of my husband, and my children's father," Lisa Gualdino said.
"However, in New York State, legislation in the past several years have raised the age of responsibility to 18."
She called on state legislators to adopt exemptions in cases like the one her family faces.
On December 1, 2022, Sgt. Gualdino was killed after a sports car driving at a high rate of speed ran into him. The driver was 16 years old at the time.
He's now 17. He was sentenced to two years' probation, with restrictions, including curfews, and lack of access to a motor vehicle.
