Election results: Votes are being counted for the world's largest elections today. The Lok Sabha elections saw polling in seven phases that began on April 19 and concluded on June 1, with a fierce contest between the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Opposition bloc, INDIA. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set for a third consecutive term as the NDA is ahead on 292 seats, according to trends on the Election Commission website.
Except for Tamil Nadu, BJP and its allies made inroads into all the states in the South.
In Andhra Pradesh, the NDA's alliance with Chandrababu Naidu has proven fruitful, with the alliance ahead on 21 out of the state's 25 seats.
Similarly, in Karnataka, the BJP secured a significant majority despite the state's historical inclination towards the Congress. The BJP is ahead on 19, while the INDIA alliance is leading on 9.
In Telangana, both the NDA and INDIA are leading on 8 seats each, as the Congress could not capitalise on its previous assembly poll victory.
The BJP realised its dream of getting an elected MP from Kerala, with actor-politician Suresh Gopi ensuring a virtually unassailable lead of over 74,000 votes in the Thrissur parliamentary segment.
