QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A man who brutally attacked a woman at the Howard Beach-JFK Airport subway station in September 2022 was sentenced to 22 years in prison, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced on Monday.

Waheed Foster, 43, pled guilty to attempted murder on June 6, prosecutors said.

The victim, Elizabeth Gomes, 33, got off a train at the station on her way to work, according to officials. Foster followed Gomes and struck her in the head with a hard object.

During the attack, Gomes was hit and kicked in the face multiple times, according to prosecutors. She was taken to a local hospital for emergency eye surgery but lost her right eye.

"It’s a miracle she’s alive today after the brutal assault she endured,” said DA Katz.

Foster was also ordered to serve five years of post-release supervision.
