THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Some high school students are studying in a cemetery.

Woodlawn Cemetery is one of the largest cemeteries in the city. It's a national historic landmark that dates back to 1863 and operates as an active burial ground.

It's also a place to learn about careers and trades.

Dozens of students from Bronx International High School are on the grounds this week to learn the process of documenting, cleaning and restoring some of the oldest movements and markers.

Meg Ventrudo is the Executive Director of the Woodlawn Conservancy.

"We think of ourselves also as a living lab," she said.

Several job training and hands-on programs are available for students and groups on the grounds throughout the year.

The skills can lead to masonry, preservation, groundskeeping and construction jobs.

Students will return in the spring.
