NEWTOWN, Conn. (PIX11) – Newtown High School’s class of 2024 is graduating with mixed emotions on Wednesday.
About 60 of the 330 graduating seniors are survivors of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut in 2012.
There will be a special recognition during the graduation ceremony for 20 of their fellow first-graders and the six educators who were killed in the shooting.
Several students shared their reflections ahead of the graduation.
“The what-ifs kind of spoil a lot of precious moments just because you always remember that they are not there," student Ella Seaver said. "So even going to prom you think what if they were my prom date? Or what if they were my significant other? Or what if they were able to walk the stage with me? Who would I still be friends with now?”
“The shooting was kind of like our most core memory growing up. And I think that took away a lot of the joy that we could have experienced,” student Grace Fischer said.
