QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) --- A Queens man who fatally shot his brother before turning the gun on himself was embroiled in family turmoil over money and jealousy over a failed grocery store, authorities said.

Karamjit Multani, 33, allegedly shot his brother, Vipanpal Multani, 27, nine times and his mother, 52, twice when she threw herself on her son to protect him in the home on 94-42 111th St. in Queens Village at around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the NYPD.

The shooter had been ridiculed after opening an unsuccessful grocery store in Indiana while his brother's deli in Valley Stream, New York thrived, police said. The father, a prominent deli owner, had given his sons money after COVID-19 to open their businesses.

"Due to COVID, the grocery store fails miserably. He goes bankrupt and is forced to move back home. A lot of tension between him and the brother over snide comments about he's a failure and his father giving him a hard time about the store not being successful," NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said at a press briefing Tuesday.

The gunman detailed the abuse in a long manifesto after his father told him he wanted him, his wife, and three kids out of the home. After a fight at family dinner, the older Multani went to his brother's room armed with two pistols and shot him multiple times, with the bullet piercing his lung eventually killing him, according to Kenny.

The mother threw herself on top of her younger son during the gunfire and was shot twice, police said. She survived her injuries.

Multani was then captured on video leaving the family home and taking off his turban before fatally shooting himself in the head.

"As he's running, he drops the gun, picks it up, has an accidental discharge, runs a few more steps, stops, and just shoots himself in the head," Kenny said.

The manifesto, a long text message to his wife about the abuse, did not mention suicide, police said.
