MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- It’s the season when thieves are helping themselves to holiday loot — truckloads of it.
While three boroughs have been targeted by the burglary crew, according to the NYPD, Manhattan’s tourist hubs are seeing the most criminal activity.
"They’re on an uptick right now," said NYPD Chief Jason Savino.
The NYPD Major Case Squad is tracking a group of up to six men and women breaking into FedEx and UPS trucks, clearing them out in 30 seconds, then carting away hundreds of boxes of goods.
"They’re taking everything they can, putting them in sacks," Savino said. "Over 100 packages at once."
Detectives captured images of the suspects and linked the crew to eight incidents across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, dating back to April. Police estimate the crew’s haul at more than a quarter million dollars.
"As with any crime, the consumer suffers. We’re talking big money — Gucci products, jewelry," Savino said.
Investigators are keeping a close eye on the backs of trucks and people’s pockets. At Bryant Park’s Winter Village, signs warn visitors of pickpockets, while undercover officers blend in with tourists. Some visitors are relieved to hear arrests are being made daily.
“Crossbody bags are the best thing; you can keep it close,” a tourist from Florida said.
While a city resident believed, “Since we’re not tourists, I think they know better than to pickpocket us."
Police warn against having a false sense of security, as these savvy criminals return for another holiday season.
