BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- He’s a popular NYCHA carpenter in Brooklyn; with his roving cart and a smile, he’s making a difference one apartment at a time.
You step inside 63-year-old Stephen Jackman’s carpenter workshop. He has a part to fix anything.
PIX11 News got a chance to see Jackman in action. A native of Trinidad and Tobago, he said he didn’t have much growing up. He’s used to building things himself. He constructed this cart out of plywood. It can handle up to 600 pounds of supplies and even has an engine.
Jackman is a 15-year NYCHA employee who has worked at the Tompkins Houses for about a year.
Whether it’s new tubs, kitchen cabinets needing repair, or other fixes, residents know when they see him roll in, something will get fixed.
Jackman could retire but doesn’t want to; he said fixing things is his passion. And building the relationship with his residents is just as important as the fix.
On NYCHA’s Instagram, every month, they tell the stories of NYCHA workers who go above and beyond daily. If you want to nominate someone, email [email protected].
