NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Nearly 20 miles of New York City roads will go car-free this summer, an increase from last year’s Summer Streets program, city officials announced Tuesday.

The streets will open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for cyclists and pedestrians on select days throughout July and August. All five boroughs will have Summer Streets.

Here is a list of Summer Streets in Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, the Bronx and Brooklyn:

July 27: Queens and Staten Island

  • (Queens) Vernon Boulevard from 44th Drive to 30th Drive
  • (Staten Island) Broadway from Richmond Terrace to Clove Road

Aug. 3, 10, 17: Manhattan

  • Lafayette Street and Park Avenue from the Brooklyn Bridge to 109th Street
  • Central Park North from Fifth Avenue to Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard
  • Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard from 110th Street to 125th Street

Aug. 24: Brooklyn and the Bronx

  • (Bronx) Grand Concourse from East Tremont Avenue to Mosholu Parkway
  • (Brooklyn) Eastern Parkway from Grand Army Plaza to Buffalo Avenue

This year’s Summer Streets program is bigger than last, with 33% more open roads, city officials said. It’s a response to last year’s great success – over 500,000 people walked, ran, cycled and played in the streets when they were shut down last summer, officials said.

“Summer Streets shows New Yorkers how joyful and pleasant our streets become when we reallocate just a portion of our roads for people to stroll, bike, and play,” said Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.

Each route will include artwork submitted by locals and selected by the Department of Transportation for one-day activations.
