NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – This week could bring days of heat topping 90 degrees, so the city will open a number of air conditioned community spaces to cool down.
Cooling centers will open Tuesday and stay open through at least Friday, Mayor Eric Adams said Monday. There will be nearly 500 cooling centers open across the city this year, an increase from years before, Adams said. Find an interactive map of New York City cooling centers here.
The National Weather Service is expected to issue a heat advisory from Thursday to Friday, as the forecast promises high heat and high humidity, Adams said. Temperatures are expected to hit over 90 degrees in the tri-state area starting Wednesday, and could reach 100 degrees.
Looking for ways to stay cool outdoors? New York City beaches are open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., but public pools have not opened for the season yet. The city’s Department of Parks and Recreation has a map to find areas with good tree cover, drinking fountains, sprinklers and more.
“The first heat wave of the season is here and we are ready,” Adams said.

Libraries
All New York, Brooklyn and Queens Public Library locations will serve as cooling centers during the heat wave. On Wednesday, library locations across the city will be closed for Juneteenth.
Older adults only cooling centers
Nearly 300 cooling centers will be reserved for older adults. Some include:
- SAGE centers in Harlem, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Midtown
- JASA Centers: Einstein, Dreiser, Rockaway Park, Brookdale Village, Senior Alliance, HES, Bay Eden, Starrett City, Bartow, Van Cortlandt, Scheuer Coney Island, Holliswood, Club 76, Roy Reuther, Williamsburg, Sue Ginsburg, Luna Park Annex
- CPC centers in Sunset Park, Flushing, Lower Manhattan and Chinatown
- NYFSC centers: Mott Street, LaGuardia, Dyckman
- CCNS locations: Northside, Dellamonica-Steinway, Pete McGuinness, Riverway, Seaside, New Age, Saint Louis, Hillcrest, The Bay, Catherine Sheridan, Best Life, Bayside, St. Charles, The Lodge, Howard Beach, Ozone Park, Narrows, Woodhaven Richmond
