NEW YORK (PIX11) --- New York City flags will be flown at half-staff Monday in honor of last year's Oct. 7 attack on Israel, according to Mayor Eric Adams.
City Hall and several municipal buildings, including the Bronx Courthouse and the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building on Centre Street, will be lit up in yellow on Monday evening.
“And as we see the devastation wrought on innocent people in the Middle East in the aftermath of this unprovoked attack, the thought of peace becomes even more distant. But that is exactly why we must continue to strive for peace — for the safe return of all of the hostages, for the defeat of Hamas, and for an end to this deadly conflict," Adams said.
Gov. Kathy Hochul also directed flags on State buildings to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in honor of the victims of the attack on Israel.
Hochul is expected to attend a Central Park vigil to honor those killed in the Oct. 7 attack.
More than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip since Israel invaded after the Oct. 7, 2023 terror attack by Hamas. At least 1,200 people were killed and Hamas took 250 people hostage in its attack on Israel.
Protests are expected at Wall Street, City Hall, Washington Square Park, Union Square, Grand Central, Times Square, and Columbus Circle, according to a post on Within Our Lifetime’s X account.
Hundreds of New Yorkers and politicians are coming together for a memorial in Union Square to honor the victims of the Hamas-Israel war. The memorial begins at 5:30 p.m.
"To those who plan to use this day to peacefully protest, that is your right. As you do so, remember to follow the law and I ask you to please hold a place in your hearts for those who lost everything a year ago today," Adams said.
