No. 1 Prospect Goes Viral For Unfortunate Reason in MLB Debut originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
For what feels like the entirety of the first half of the 2025 MLB season, Boston Red Sox fans have been clamoring for the team's top prospect, Roman Anthony, to get called up to the show.
While the Sox played the waiting game for a bit, the team needed a spark as they came into Monday's game against their AL West Rival Tampa Bay Rays, three games under .500.
That spark that they so badly needed resulted in them giving the MLB's top prospect the nod. The versatile outfielder who was drafted with the No. 79 pick in the 2022 MLB Draft out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida got the start in right field, and was batting fifth.
While he has been praised for his ability to play all three outfield spots, he recorded his first lowlight of his career in the the top of the fifth inning, with the Sox down 2-0. With Tampa Bay's All-Star first baseman Yandy Diaz up with two outs and a runner on first, he shot a hard line drive to Anthony in right.
Despite Anthony seemingly being in position to field the ball cleanly, the ball skipped under his glove and nearly rolled all the way to the fence.

— Talkin’ Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) June 10, 2025Luckily for him, center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela was able to get to the ball, but what likely should have kept the runners on first and second, resulted in a run scoring to make it 3-0 Tampa Bay.
A couple hours after the posting of his error, the video has well over 500,000 views.
Aside from getting his footing under him on the defensive side of things, Anthony also was silent at the plate Monday evening. The top prospect went 0-of-4, getting fanned once.
The silver lining of Monday's game was he did record his first MLB RBI.
In what likely would have been his first hit if it was a foot to the left or right, Anthony smacked a 111 MPH line drive off the hip of Tampa's Shane Baz. The ball ricocheted to the shortstop, who threw Anthony out, but the play did allow for Rafael Devers to score.
As for the Red Sox, they ended up losing 10-8 after 11 innings.
