NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – Today's cleanliness and education were the links at one New Jersey School.
Believing that clean clothes lead to a sharper mind, the Chancellor Avenue School in Newark cut the ribbon for a new room housing a washer and dryer.
They added wash and dry to the three R's at the Chancellor Avenue school in Newark.
The ribbon cutting welcomed the opening of the "Chancellor's Closet." This new resource helps students access clean clothing without missing classes.
Karen Hudson, President of North Jersey "The Links," told the ceremonial gathering, "We found many students not coming to school or coming to school late because they didn't have proper clothing or uniforms that werent clean."
The North Jersey chapter of The Links, one of the nation's oldest and largest women's service organizations, donated a washer and dryer to the school and a supply of school uniforms for students to wear while their clothes were being washed.
A parent told the crowd, "You are making a serious impact in the lives of our children."
School officials noted that providing clean uniforms removes obstacles that can hinder a child's ability to focus on learning.
Chancellor Avenue School Principal Kershon Lopes observed, "Sometimes accidents happen at school. Soiled shirts and blouses are unkempt and unclean. So having a washer and dryer removes that barrier so our students can access quality education."
Officials say empowering students to care for their clothing boosts their self-esteem.
