NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- The entire New York Liberty team was given keys to New York City Thursday after their first-ever WNBA championship win.
The honor followed a special ticker-tape parade for the team in Lower Manhattan on Thursday.
“There’s been so [many] sacrifices that had to happen for us to be able to do this so there’s a lot of gratitude and a lot of joy,” MVP Jonquel Jones told PIX11 News from the team's parade float.
In 2015, keys to the city were given to the U.S. women's national soccer team following their World Cup win.
The New York Liberty clinched their first-ever title on Sunday with a 67-62 win against the Minnesota Lynx. It's the first professional basketball championship win for New York City since the 1970s.
