Brooklyn, NY (PIX 11) — The New York Liberty continued celebrating their historic victory Thursday night in front of a sold-out crowd at the Barclays Center after securing their first-ever WNBA championship.
The Barclays Center buzzed with excitement as thousands of die-hard fans gathered in the sold-out arena to honor the team.
“It’s fantastic!” Exclaimed Liberty fan Jeanette Prince. “We are so happy that we finally got something in New York.”
Players addressed the crowd while holding their championship trophy and expressing their gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support throughout the season.
The moment marked the peak of the franchise’s journey, which has long sought its first championship.
Kerri Saputo is a longtime fan who said she’s been waiting for this moment for over two decades.
“It’s so exciting for me,” Saputo said. “I’ve been a women’s basketball fan since I was a little girl, so it’s been 25 years in the making, and I’ve always loved the sport, and I’ve wanted so many people to see the greatness in it, and seeing how many people are here and seeing the greatness in women’s basketball makes me so happy.”
The energy ramped up as the Liberty’s dance crew, the Timeless Torches, brought the house down with a performance that had fans on their feet.
Danielle Demisay said this win has been coming for a long time.
“I'm very emotional,” said Demisay. “I’ve been watching since ‘97. I’ve been going [to games] since ‘99. This means everything. It’s monumental. The city shows up for them. We show up for them. I can’t even put into words how happy I am.”
The event went beyond commemorating the championship—it was a moment for the community, the fans, and the city to come together and celebrate a historic moment that will be remembered for years to come.
