NEW YORK (PIX11) – The New York Department of Motor Vehicles is busting myths and misinformation.
In June 2024, Mobile ID was launched – a new app that allows New Yorkers to carry digital versions of their state-issued identification cards. Misinformation has been circulating about the app, according to the DMV
One myth is that everyone in the state must get a New York Mobile ID. The DMV wants New Yorkers to know that the ID is voluntary. The app was designed for convenience and security, enabling highly secure, contactless interactions.
“Our Mobile ID is carefully designed to protect your privacy. The power of safeguarding your most personal information is literally in your hands,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “Unlike your physical license, you do not have to hand your phone over to anyone in order for them to confirm your identity.”
Other Mobile ID myths:
You need to hand over your electronic device to a verifier
You should never hand over your phone to anyone when using Mobile ID. Just open the app and tap Share ID, and a QR code will appear that can be scanned by a device.
This QR code contains no personal data.
The government is tracking you through your Mobile ID
The DMV cannot track where you use your Mobile ID.
Mobile ID is a photo of your plastic ID card
The New York Mobile ID was designed with strict standards in mind. It should not resemble a picture of your driver's license or non-driver ID. A mobile ID follows the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Mobile Driver’s License Implementation Guidelines created by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) and can only be authenticated through an encrypted connection with a verifier device.
