Mermaid Parade to return to Coney Island this weekend

CONEY ISLAND, Brooklyn (PIX11) – The Mermaid Parade, an eccentric Coney Island tradition featuring marching bands, floats, antique cars and thousands of participants dressed in handcrafted sea-themed costumes, will take place this weekend.

The 42nd annual Mermaid Parade will start at 1 p.m. in Coney Island on Saturday, June 22.

The Mermaid Parade includes around 3,000 participants and typically draws hundreds of thousands of spectators, according to Coney Island USA, the not-for-profit arts organization that organizes the event.

Painter Joe Coleman and his wife, photographer Whitney Ward, will serve as King Neptune and Queen Mermaid in the parade this year.

The Mermaid Parade route

The Mermaid Parade will start at West 21st Street and Surf Avenue, then head east to West 10th Street. At West 10th Street, the parade will turn south toward the boardwalk. 

Cars and motorized floats will continue down Surf Avenue and pass West 10th Street, then exit the parade.

At the boardwalk, marchers and push-pull floats will go west and head toward West 17th Street. The parade will disband at Steeplechase Plaza.

The Mermaid Parade Ball

The Mermaid Parade Ball will be held at 3 p.m. at the Coney Island Amphitheater at 3052 West 21st St. Tickets for the event can be purchased here.
