THE BRONX (PIX11) -- A 32-year-old man was shot by an NYPD officer in the Bronx Sunday evening, according to the NYPD.
The shooting happened around 5:38 p.m. at 335 East 148th Street.
Police say they received a 911 call about a man attempting to steal an air conditioner at the address. Officers responded to the second floor but were unable to locate the caller and walked down towards the first-floor landing.
At that time, the victim was coming up the stairs from a side entrance with a kitchen knife in his hand, police say. The officers put a hand up to motion for him to stop and gave him verbal commands, including "wait" and "drop it."
Police say the man did not comply and quickly approached them with the knife in his right hand. One officer fired at him, striking the man in the torso.
The man was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive, according to the NYPD.
Police believe the man to be the 911 caller and that he confronted another man in the side courtyard of the building after making the call. Security cameras in the building show the confrontation occurred, according to NYPD officials.
