Karnataka

In Karnataka, Makar Sankranti is observed as Suggi, a harvest festival for farmers. Girls get dressed in new clothes and visit their loved ones on this day. They distribute sweets, dried coconut, fried groundnuts, and jaggery, along with white sesame seeds mixed in. This celebration marks the beginning of sugarcane harvest season, which is a major crop in the region. In some regions of Karnataka, newlyweds are obligated to gift married ladies bananas on this day for five years. Every year, the quantity of bananas distributed rises by multiples of five.

Tamil Nadu
In Tamil Nadu, Makar Sankranti is also observed as the four-day Pongal vacation. Boghi, the first day of the celebration, is marked by the destruction and discarding of old clothing and things through fire. With this, the old has come to an end and the new has begun.

Thai Pongal
