LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) – A Long Island nonprofit is looking for volunteers to open their homes to puppies training to become guide dogs.
The Guide Dog Foundation, based in Smithtown, is seeking either foster homes or "Puppy Camps," where volunteers would have a puppy for a short period of time, which could last two to three weeks.
According to the nonprofit, the hope is that the "Puppy Camp" will socialize the puppy, teach it good manners, and get it into a potty-training routine so that it can build confidence in new environments.
The nonprofit will give volunteers everything they need to care for the puppy, including a leash, collar, crate, food and other necessities. In addition, all veterinarian costs are covered.
The puppy then returns to The Guide Dog Foundation after "Puppy Camp" so they can continue to train as a guide dog.
