NEW YORK (PIX11) – Democrat Laura Gillen has won the election in New York’s 4th Congressional District, beating incumbent Republican Rep. Anthony D’Esposito.
The swing district covers southwest and central Nassau County. It’s one of the seven swing districts in New York that could impact the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives. Gillen’s win flips the House seat, taking it away from the Republican party.
Gillen, an attorney, was the Hempstead town supervisor. She was elected to the position in 2017 and was the first Democrat to serve as Hempstead town supervisor in over 100 years, according to her campaign website.
Gillen plans to focus on protecting women’s rights to abortion. She has also called for more law enforcement and security at the U.S.-Mexico border to help solve the migrant crisis.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries campaigned with Gillen to win the House seat for the Democratic party.
