Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma delighted Harry Potter fans after sharing pictures of a snake - named after a character in the novel series - that was found in the state. Isn't nature awesome, Sarma said in his post as he announced that the Salazar pit viper was found in Assam's Kaziranga National Park earlier this week. Salazar pit viper has been named after the famous Harry Potter character, Salazar Slytherin.
A species of venomous, green pit viper, Salazar pit viper was first discovered in 2019 in the lowlands of the western part of Arunachal Pradesh.
In the world of Harry Potter, Salazar Slytherin was one of the co-founders of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Along with Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Helga Hufflepuff, Slytherin established the school. Salazar Slytherin was particularly renowned for his skill of communicating with serpents, a language which was known as Parseltongue.
The serpent also serves as the emblem for Slytherin House within the Hogwarts School, as depicted in the seven fantasy novels by British author JK Rowling.
“Guess what, kids? Kaziranga just found a real-life Harry Potter snake! Meet the super cool Salazar Pit Viper: it's green like magic and has a funky red-orange stripe on its head. Isn't nature awesome,” Sarma said in his post that also accompanied pictures of the snake.

The Salazar pit viper has a dark green head and yellow-hued green dorsal scales on the rest of its body - males have reddish-orange and yellow-orange stripes and a rusty red-orange tail which females lack.
