RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh’s Durg police have lodged an FIR against the stand-up comedian Yash Rathi on charges of uttering obscene words and objectionable content during the annual fest at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai on November 15.
Durg SP Jitendra Shukla told TOI that an FIR was lodged under Sections of 296 of the BNS at Jevra Sirsa police Chowki after police received several complaints against Rathi for serving vulgar content at a gathering of IIT-Bhilai, where professors and guests had to shut their ears in embarrassment.
Rathi was asked by the student council to get off the stage after objection raised by professors, but the videos of the event went viral on social media causing an uproar among youth wings of political parties including NSUI, BJYM and Karni Sena.
SP said that IIT-Bhilai authorities had also written a letter to police informing about the incident, requesting to file a police complaint. IIT-Bhilai has also launched a probe constituting a committee to find out why was Rathi invited to the event and who had chosen him to perform at the event, issuing an order that no stand-up comedy show to be organized in future in the institute.
IIT Bhilai director Rajiv Prakash told the media, “It was shocking to when Rathi used objectionable language in the event.”
TOI on Tuesday had reported about the standup comedy act by Yash Rathi turning into an embarrassing experience for professors and guests, that led to an inquiry.
The incident took place on November 15 during the annual fest, ‘Mirage’, organized by IIT-Bhilai’s council of students’ affairs. Parents, family members, professors and other guests were invited.
Rathi started in English, and then switched to Hindi slang and sexually-laced comments, say those who attended the event. “It was embarrassing for everyone as there were children, especially girls, along with their families at the event. Many started walking out,” said one.
In 2023, Rathi was booked by Dehradun police for objectionable remarks on Lord Ram during a show.
