Falayn Ferrell, the managing partner of Black Business Week, said the promotion creates awareness of black-owned culinary businesses. She said owners are sometimes "pulling money from personal savings when it's really hard to get a loan from a bank."

She told PIX11 News that some of the restaurants "are doing happy hours, live music nights, karaoke. It is really a fun celebration; it's time for the community to fellowship with each other."

Brooklyn Chop House in Manhattan is one of the restaurants participating for the first time.

"The cost of the real estate is very expensive, and restaurants operate on very small margins. I'm just so excited to be part of Black Restaurant Week. I think it highlights the black-owned restaurants that aren't necessarily highlighted throughout the year," owner Robert Cummins told PIX11 News.

This is the fifth year that Black Restaurant Week is being held in New York City and parts of New Jersey.
