NEW YORK (PIX11) -- New Yorkers celebrated Juneteenth during several events around the city on Wednesday.
From a festival in Brooklyn to a block party in Harlem.
Grandma’s Place Book and Toy Store and members of a block association hosted a cultural event for families.
It included food, music, and face painting, to name a few.
The day was spent reflecting on African American traditions and culture.
On June 19th, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, enslaved people finally found out they had been freed after the end of the Civil War and two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
For some, it’s not about the holiday or having a day off. It’s more about freedom.
It became a National Holiday in 2021.
