MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- In a 57-page indictment unsealed Thursday, prosecutors charged Mayor Eric Adams with bribery, solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national, and wire fraud.
Following the announcement, a handful of officials began to call for Adams to resign.
Public advocate Jumaane Williams would be next in line to take over the position, followed by the comptroller.
On Sunday, Williams sat down for an exclusive interview with PIX11 news correspondent Jay Dow to discuss the recent developments.
Williams addressed whether he thinks Adams should resign and if the charges could overshadow the mayor's accomplishments.
"First off, this is a painful time for the city," said Williams. "I'm in the line of succession, so I like to try to be, depending on where I am, really responsible in how I'm having these conversations, but at some point, you have to worry about how long autopilot lasts without a main pilot. That's the big concern."
"I hope as the mayor is going through questions about whether or not he can put forth a plan to show that he can govern the city still with the weight of this, he can rebuild the trust that has been eroded, which is separate from the fight that he should have for his innocence."
