NEW YORK (PIX11) – Famed competitive eater Joey Chestnut will still compete on the 4th of July this year – just not at Coney Island.
The all-time great will instead take on soldiers in El Paso, Texas.
Organizers of a Fourth of July event for military families at Fort Bliss, dubbed Pop Goes the Fort, asked Chestnut on social media to take on their soldiers in a hot dog eating contest.
“Bring me your best 4 eaters and I'll take them down, combined!” Chestnut responded in a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Chestnut will not compete at this year’s Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island due to a brand deal with a meatless hot dog brand, according to Major League Eating.
Chestnut and the league disagreed on who was at fault for Chestnut’s absence, but both agreed the fans lost out most.
“I love competing in that event, I love celebrating America with my fans all over this great country on the 4th and I have been training to defend my title,” Chestnut said at the time. “To my fans, I love you and appreciate you. Rest assured that you’ll see me eat again soon!”
Shortly after, Netflix announced Chestnut will compete in a streamed eating competition against competitive eating great Takeru Kobayashi on Labor Day.
